Through out the year, we try to host and participate in many different philanthropic events. In the past, we have raised money for the Kelowna Community Foodbank. In 2010, we joined in the Engineering Undergraduate Societies Movember campaign on campus by donating money raised from a bake sale.
This year, we hope to help fundraise for the Run for the Cure in support of Breast Cancer Research, as well as volunteer once again for the BMO Run, along with some new efforts such as Christmas Cards for the Elderly and Trick or Eat (in support of the Food Bank and through the KULA Club on campus).
For the 2013/2014 school year, AOE kicked off the year in October by volunteering at the BMO Marathon held in downtown Kelowna. Actives and Candies were out bright and early, handing out water, protein bars and bright smiles to the hard working runners! Go team!
Near the end of November, AOE members helped out the WiSE for the annual awareness week about the tragic shooting at Polytechnique. Events included handing out informative brochures and white ribbons to raise awareness about preventing violence against women. They also helped in painting the Engineer E in white in remembrance for those who tragically died at Polytechnique.
In March, AOE raised money and awareness for the Relay For Life event, which raises funds and awareness for cancer and research. Funds were raised through a bake sale held (Yum!) as well as through individual members campaigning and fundraising. It was a 12 hour event relay which involved participating in the many activities held out throughout the night in the EME (mainly the continuous walking/relaying around the EME). Funds were raised, smiles were made and although there were some sad parts of the night, it was inspirational and uplifting. The event was made for the AOE when we discovered we had raised the most money out of all the teams at UBCO! Way to go AOE!
At the end of the year, efforts such as clothing and food donations were made to the local charities around Kelowna. AOE members also helped out at the KULA Coffeehouse Fundraiser, which raised money for the Make A Wish Foundation.
This year, we have helped volunteer for a few different events and raise money for a few different causes.
In October, we volunteered at the YWCA Power of Being a Girl conference that was hosted in Kelowna. We also participated in the Kelowna Walk for Wishes, and our team raised the third highest amount in Kelowna.
This November, we hosted a Movember Kickoff Party and raised around $100 to go towards prostate cancer research.
